WATERFRONT RETAIL AND COMMERCIAL REDEVELOPMENT ALONG THE DUMBO WATERFRONT
Located on the DUMBO waterfront, HK won the RFP in 2013 to redevelop the seven contiguous historic Empire Stores warehouses in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Previously abandoned in the 1960s, Empire Stores has undergone a $150 million redevelopment, which reactivated the industrial waterfront structures while providing a revitalized retail and pedestrian experience. Empire Stores offers more than 380,000 square feet of creative office space, approximately 60,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and event space, and features multiple public spaces. The innovative planning and respect for historic elements resulted in numerous awards including a 2019 ULI Global Award for Excellence, the 2018 Municipal Arts Society NY Best Adaptive Reuse Award, the 2018 American Institute of Architects NY State Honor Award and the 2018 ULI Excellence in Repositioning or Redevelopment Award.
